How Material Selection Works

From your initial product concept to approved materials ready for bulk production — here’s the step-by-step process we follow with every OEM/ODM partner.

1
Define Your Product Type
Tell us what you’re manufacturing — handbag, wallet, crossbody, backpack, tote, or cosmetic bag. Each product type has different material requirements for structure, durability, and hand-feel.
→ Output: Product specification brief
2
Set Your Target Retail Price & Market
Define your retail price range and target market (EU, US, Asia-Pacific). This directly determines the material tier — luxury brands use full-grain leather; mid-market brands may prefer top-grain or high-quality PU.
→ Output: Material tier recommendation (Luxury / Premium / Mid-Market / Value)
3
Receive Material Recommendation
We recommend a specific material combination covering all 6 categories: outer leather, lining, hardware, finish, color matching, and certification requirements. You get a detailed material sheet with options at different price points.
→ Output: Material combination proposal (2-3 options per category)
4
Sample Approval
We send physical swatch books or custom material samples for your review. You can touch, feel, and evaluate each material before committing. For custom colors, we provide Pantone-matched dye lot samples.
→ Output: Physical material samples for approval
5
Production with Approved Materials
Once materials are approved, we move into pre-production sampling. The final product sample uses your exact chosen materials. After your sign-off, bulk production begins with batch-level material QC.
→ Output: Pre-production sample → Bulk production

Frequently Asked Questions About Leather Goods Materials

Covering leather, hardware, lining, colors, and compliance — the complete material picture.

Full grain leather preserves the natural grain surface with minimal surface correction. — it’s the strongest and most breathable grade, and with proper care it develops a rich patina and remains durable for many years. Top grain leather is lightly sanded to remove surface imperfections, then finished with a protective coating.

Yes, hardware customization is a core part of our OEM/ODM service. You can specify: (1) Base material — brass, zinc alloy, stainless steel, or iron; (2) Electroplated finish — gold, silver, rose gold, gunmetal, matte black, antique brass, or custom color; (3) Logo engraving — custom-branded zipper pulls, logo plates, magnetic snaps, and rivets. We provide hardware finish swatches and can match existing brand hardware specifications. MOQ for custom hardware finishes typically mirrors the product MOQ (100–300 units).

Yes, YKK zippers are used in our production. We use YKK zipper for premium OEM/ODM projects, with options across their full product range: metal zippers (for premium bags and wallets), coil zippers (for lightweight applications), and Vislon zippers (for durability in travel goods). We also offer SBS zippers as a cost-effective alternative for mid-market products. If your brand requires a specific zipper type, color, or custom puller design, we can source it from YKK or your preferred supplier.

Yes, we provide coordinated color matching between lining and leather.

For products requiring water resistance — such as cosmetic bags, toiletry bags, and travel accessories — we recommend: (1) Nylon lining — naturally water-resistant, lightweight, and easy to clean; most popular for functional bags; (2) Water-resistant polyester — coated polyester with moisture-barrier properties; (3) PU-coated cotton — cotton fabric with a clear PU coating for a natural look with water protection. Standard cotton or microfiber linings without treatment are not water-resistant and are better suited for handbags and wallets where moisture exposure is minimal.

Standard materials from our supplier typically have no additional MOQ beyond the product MOQ (100–300 units per design, depending on product complexity). For custom-developed materials — custom color dye lots, custom-embossed textures, specialty hardware finishes — the supplier may require a minimum hide or component order. We communicate any custom-material MOQs upfront during quoting so you can make informed decisions.

For private label handbags, we typically recommend Top Grain cowhide with a semi-aniline finish — it offers the best balance of quality appearance, durability. For luxury private label, full-grain calfskin or goatskin creates a premium hand-feel that discerning customers recognize immediately. For affordable fashion lines , PU or microfiber leather provides excellent color consistency and lower MOQ flexibility.

Yes — and we strongly recommend it. We provide material swatch books (showing our full leather and color range) and strike-off samples (your selected material in your specific color, texture, and finish) before you commit to bulk production.

Yes. We provide Pantone color matching across leather, lining fabric, stitching thread, and edge paint — ensuring brand color consistency.
